Golden hour never looked so good
Maui's west-facing shores deliver some of the most spectacular sunsets on Earth. Here are the best vantage points to catch the show.
The wide expanse of Ka'anapali Beach offers an unobstructed western horizon that turns into a canvas of orange, pink, and gold each evening. Grab a spot near Black Rock to combine sunset watching with the nightly cliff diving ceremony. The beachfront restaurants along the Whalers Village strip offer prime sunset dining.
South Maui's Wailea Beach offers a more refined sunset experience. The manicured beach path is perfect for an evening stroll as the sky transforms. During whale season from December through April, you might spot humpback whales breaching against the backdrop of a setting sun.
For something truly otherworldly, watch the sunset from 10,023 feet above sea level at the summit of Haleakala. Above the cloud layer, the colors are intensified in the thin air, and the volcanic crater below adds a surreal, almost alien quality. Sunset viewing permits are not required, but arrive early for parking and bring very warm layers.
This sheltered bay on the northwest coast frames the sunset beautifully between rocky headlands. The calm waters create mirror-like reflections of the sky. Pack a picnic and settle onto the grassy hill above the beach for one of the most peaceful sunset experiences on the island.
