Whale Watching with Kids on Maui

Making humpback whale encounters unforgettable for the whole family

A whale watching tour is one of the most magical family experiences Maui offers. Here's how to make it perfect for kids of all ages.

Choosing the Right Tour for Your Family

For families with young children (under 6), choose a larger, more stable vessel like a catamaran or a double-deck boat. These offer smoother rides, onboard restrooms, and more room to move around. Shorter 1.5-hour tours are better for little ones with limited attention spans. Most operators welcome children, and many provide kid-sized life jackets.

For older kids and teens, consider a raft or zodiac-style tour. These smaller boats ride lower on the water, putting you almost at eye level with the whales. The experience is more thrilling and immersive, though it can be bouncy. Motion sickness medication is recommended for anyone prone to seasickness.

Preparing Kids for the Experience

Build excitement before the trip by watching whale documentaries or reading about humpback behavior together. Teach kids to identify the different behaviors -- breach, tail slap, pec slap, blow -- and make it a game to be the first to spot each one. Bring a waterproof camera and let them be the official family photographer.

Pack dramamine or natural sea sickness remedies (ginger chews work well for some kids), especially if your child has never been on a boat. Apply at least 30 minutes before boarding. Bring layers, as mornings on the water can be chilly, and snacks to keep energy up.

What Kids Love Most

Without exception, kids lose their minds when a whale breaches. The sheer size and explosive power of a 40-ton animal launching itself out of the water is awe-inspiring for adults and absolutely electrifying for children. Baby whales practicing their breaches -- often landing awkwardly in messy splashes -- are particularly entertaining.

Many tours use hydrophones (underwater microphones) to play whale song through onboard speakers. The haunting, complex songs of male humpbacks captivate kids and make the experience feel even more connected to these incredible animals. Ask your tour operator if they use hydrophones when booking.
