Explore the cool, pastoral slopes of Haleakala
Escape the beach resorts and discover Maui's cool, green highlands -- cowboy towns, lavender farms, wineries, and the best views on the island.
Upcountry Maui, the area stretching along the western slopes of Haleakala from about 1,500 to 4,000 feet elevation, is a world apart from the beach resorts below. The air is cooler, the landscape is lush and green, and the pace of life slows to match the rolling pastures and eucalyptus-lined roads. This is Maui's agricultural heartland, where ranchers, farmers, and artisans have worked the fertile volcanic soil for generations.
The towns of Makawao, Kula, and Pukalani are the anchors of upcountry life. Each offers its own character: Makawao is the colorful former paniolo (cowboy) town with galleries and boutiques; Kula is farming country famous for its sweet onions and protea flowers; Pukalani is the quiet residential hub where many Maui locals call home.
Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm sits at 4,000 feet with sweeping views of the central valley and ocean. Wander through 45 varieties of lavender, shop for lavender products, and enjoy the cool mountain air. The Surfing Goat Dairy offers farm tours where kids can feed and interact with goats while learning about artisan cheese production.
MauiWine at the historic Ulupalakua Ranch is Hawaii's only winery, producing wines from grapes and local pineapple. The tasting room sits in a 160-year-old cottage with gorgeous grounds perfect for a leisurely afternoon. O'o Farm in Kula offers guided farm tours followed by a multi-course lunch prepared from ingredients picked during the walk.
Makawao's colorful storefronts line Baldwin Avenue, housing art galleries, surf shops, yoga studios, and restaurants. The town hosts the annual Makawao Rodeo every Fourth of July, celebrating the paniolo heritage that dates back to the 1830s when Mexican vaqueros came to Hawaii to teach Hawaiians cattle ranching.
