Best Snorkel Tours on Maui: Molokini, Turtle Town & More

Guided ocean adventures for every skill level

From the volcanic crescent of Molokini to the turtle-filled waters of South Maui, these are the snorkel tours that deliver unforgettable underwater experiences.

Molokini Crater: The Crown Jewel

Molokini is a partially submerged volcanic crater located about three miles off Maui's south coast. The crescent-shaped islet creates a natural protected area with visibility often exceeding 150 feet -- some of the clearest snorkeling water in the world. Over 250 species of fish and 38 species of hard coral call Molokini home, including many species found nowhere else.

Morning departures from Ma'alaea Harbor offer the calmest conditions and best visibility. Most tours visit two stops: the inner wall of Molokini for snorkeling and a second stop at Turtle Town for sea turtle encounters. Full-day and half-day options are available, with most tours providing all equipment, instruction for beginners, and a meal onboard.

Book morning tours whenever possible. Afternoon trade winds create choppier conditions and reduce visibility at Molokini. The earliest departures (6:30-7:00 AM) typically have the best conditions and fewer boats at the crater.

Turtle Town Snorkeling

Turtle Town is a stretch of South Maui coastline where Hawaiian green sea turtles gather to feed on algae growing on submerged lava formations. Boat tours from both Ma'alaea and Kihei visit this area, and turtle encounters are virtually guaranteed on calm days.

The underwater landscape of Turtle Town is remarkable -- volcanic rock arches, tunnels, and caverns create a dramatic backdrop for the turtles gliding gracefully through the water. Remember the 10-foot rule: observe from a respectful distance and never chase or touch the turtles.

Lana'i Snorkel Adventures

For a more adventurous snorkel trip, several operators run excursions to the neighboring island of Lana'i. The crossing takes about 45 minutes, and the pristine reefs along Lana'i's southern coast see far fewer visitors than Maui's popular spots. Spinner dolphins frequently escort boats across the channel, and the snorkeling sites feature dramatic underwater formations and exceptional marine life diversity.

Choosing the Right Tour

Large catamarans (50-100+ passengers) offer stability, onboard amenities, and lower prices. They are great for families and first-time snorkelers. Smaller boats (6-24 passengers) provide a more personalized experience with more time in the water and fewer crowds at the snorkel site.

For experienced snorkelers, look for tours that visit the back wall of Molokini, where the reef drops off into deep blue water and encounters with manta rays, reef sharks, and pelagic fish are possible. These advanced trips require confident swimming ability and comfort in deeper water.
